SMS toll payment using number plate recognition

The first toll payment system by mobile phone text messages has been successfully trialled on the Bosphorus Bridge in Istanbul, which makes use of advanced imaging systems from Vitronic.

The bridge links Europe to Asia and frequently experiences very heavy traffic, with toll gates frequently reaching their capacity. The new system is hoped to provide a smoother method of payments with fewer hold-ups.

The driver simply has to text the license plate number and type of vehicle. The TollChecker vehicle classification system and PoliScan number plate recognition system from Vitronic then register the car at the toll gateway, without stopping the traffic. A complete set of images is stored as evidence in case violations occur.
