5MP Phoenix polarisation camera

LUCID Vision Labs, Inc., a designer and manufacturer of unique and innovative industrial vision cameras, today announced the release of the color version of its 5 Megapixel Phoenix polarization camera.

In addition to the monochrome version of the Phoenix polarization model, LUCID has now integrated the Sony IMX250MYR polarized color sensor into its Phoenix camera family. The 5 MP global shutter sensor with a pixel size of 3.45µm and frame rates of up to 24 fps is based on the popular IMX250 Sony Pregius CMOS color sensor with polarizing filters added to the pixel. The sensor has four different directional polarizing filters (0°, 90°, 45°, and 135°) on every 2 by 2 array of pixels. The Phoenix color polarization camera allows users to compute both color and angle of polarization information for each image pixel.

“We’ve seen strong demand in our Phoenix mono polarization camera since we launched it in May this year and we’re excited to now add the color model to our portfolio,” says Rod Barman, Founder and President at LUCID Vision Labs. “Polarization with a color sensor can be beneficial to many applications such as ophthalmology to remove reflected light from the eye using polarization while performing diagnosis on the eye using RGB images, or in agriculture such as fruit picking where both polarized and RGB images can determine the health and ripeness of fruits simultaneously. Another interesting area is in UAV and drone applications to effectively remove dense haze, fog or smoke using the polarimetric dehazing method.”

The Phoenix color polarization camera is equipped with a RGGB Bayer filter in addition to the directional polarizing filter to form a 4 by 4 array. The raw image data can be processed into an RGB image per polarization channel. The deinterleaving process along with the polarization data allows for polarization visualization of a colored object.

Featuring a micro compact, versatile board design, the Phoenix measures only 24 x 24 mm and is the world’s smallest GigE PoE camera. It features NF-mount and lens options to provide an even smaller footprint, saving 40% in size compared to equivalent C-mount lenses. All LUCID cameras conform to the GigE Vision 2.0 and GenICam3 standards and are supported by the company’s own Arena software development kit.
