Large 3D fluorescence imaging process to be patented

A 3D fluorescence process for quickly scanning larger samples is to be patented by German laser research centre, Laser Zentrum Hannover.

The 3D fluorescence process is called SLOT and according to Laser Zentrum Hannover it is the optical equivalent to computer tomography. It simultaneously records transmissive, scattered and fluorescent light. Samples can be quickly imaged with a 3D resolution that is at least one thousandth of the object size. In 2012, the growth of bacteria on the surfaces of dental implants was imaged in three-dimensions. This imaging included the in vitro development of micro-organisms.

Laser Zentrum Hannover is to develop the process further to reach an imaging speed of 20 seconds for 600 individual projections can be reached.

The development of LSTM is financially supported by the German Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology. Besides the LZH, project partners are the companies LaVision BioTec and Scivis wissenschaftliche Bildverarbeitung.
