Thermal imaging provides increased safety at G8 summit

Organisers of the G8 summit in Germany this June used thermal imaging to provide 24-hour surveillance around an 11km security fence that protected the congress hotel from protesters and terrorists.

The SR-35 thermal imaging cameras from Flir were placed every 400m along the fence, and overlooked a dense forest that surrounded the hotel. The cameras could detect intruders more than 500m away, giving the security team plenty of time to react to an incident.

Unlike normal cameras that capture images from visible light, the thermal cameras could function at night without the need for artificial illumination, which would be more expensive, and could actually highlight possible routes for attack to the intruders.

Police officer patrolling the secured areas also carried Flir System’s FlashSight handheld thermal cameras to detect hidden intruders.
