Robot gets picky with Powerlink

A Galileo Sphere robot is using the open communication protocol Powerlink in drive control and pick-and-place applications.

The robot contains direct drive technology in three axes which was developed by the Austrian control manufacturer B&R in cooperation with Mechatronic System Company, part of the Italian Motor Power Group.

The system mainly consists of a torque motor, an arc-shaped linear motor and two ironless linear motors housed in tubes fitted with a gripper which is attached to a mechanical wrist. Providing a dynamic torque up to 1,036Nm, the system handles loads with a maximum weight of 4kg.

A higher-level controller calculates the path for all axes. The real-time protocol Powerlink, which ensures synchronous data transfer and is capable of handling large amounts of data, enables smooth operation.
