The G3, the European Machine Vision Association (EMVA), the Automated Imaging Association (AIA) and the Japan Industrial Imaging Association (JIIA), have established a joint association initiative called the Future Standards Forum (FSF).

FSF aims to provide proactive, strategic guidance to the development of industry standards and to minimise the creation of conflicting standards within the machine vision industry and in neighbouring industries. It will investigate opportunities offered by new technologies and identify future challenges, and provide recommendations for new standards and the evolution of existing standards. Additionally, FSF will promote the re-use and harmonisation of existing standards in order to minimise overlap between standards and prevent double work.

The FSF will have a steering committee formed of nine members. This will stimulate the creation of working groups, which in turn will carry out the technical management.

The first of these working groups will look at the roadmap of interface standards that are already hosted by one or more of the associations or that are currently under development. The second will focus on lighting standards. More working groups are already in discussion.
